Points, badges and leaderboards are the most copied tools in gamified learning. They work when they describe skill. They fail when they only describe who clicked fastest.
Points
Award points for completed practice, not for logging in. Learners should see why the number moved. A point without a skill is noise.
Badges
A badge is a certificate in miniature. Give it for a visible outcome: finished a module, helped a peer, shipped a project. Rare badges beat a wall of stickers.
Leaderboards
Public ranks motivate some people and freeze others. Prefer team boards, weekly resets or “beat your last score”. A permanent top-three list teaches the rest of the room to stop trying.
Use with care
Start with one mechanic. Measure whether more people finish the work. If they only chase the score, change the rules, not the theme.
